Holistic Health

In 2009, Kensu was introduced to a raw vegan diet. After six weeks of this new regimen, his angina (heart strain) disappeared, and a few months later, a chronic lower back-pain (slipped disk) also vanished. Neither of them has bothered him since.

Highly impressed by the power of nutrition, he dived into the field emphatically and enrolled as a student at the Holistic and Education Centre, Ohio, USA, where he became certified as a Holistic Nutritional Counsellor.

Based in Jamaica at the time, Kensu hosted a radio program called Naturally Holistic and established a small outfit called The Melanin Clinic, which served the public through various offices across the island.

Shortly after returning to the UK, life served Kensu a swift curveball: a painful blessing, forcing attention inwards to check himself like never before. In the depths of this introspection, a deeper and wider meaning of holistic health entered his perception.

Up until that point, the cause of most human ailments was understood to revolve around undernutrition. Although stress was often a suspected accomplice, a keen study of psychology revealed the extent to which stress is involved.

Still, it didn’t stop there.

A few steps along the ancient path of self-discovery exposed the ultimate source of stress as mistaken identity. By identifying with the flesh and blood accumulated from digested food, the true self becomes smothered in a type of hibernation, an eclipse.

This is the source of human conflict and misery.

Identifying with a body susceptible to accidents, illnesses and death, induces the subtle pain of separation. Thus, demanding self-medication through the range of compulsive behaviours governing human beings.

Most of the ailments plaguing humanity are symptoms of identifying with what we’re not. Rendering the primary cause of dis-ease—loss of self —and the ultimate remedy—self-discovery; a timeless message proclaimed by the distinguished axiom—know thyself to heal thyself.

Moreover, the original definition of health revolves around completeness, soundness, welfare, peace, safety, tranquillity, prosperity and contentment. In other words, holistic wellness is closely aligned with self-realisation; a reality well demonstrated in Anita Moorjani’s memoir, Dying to Be Me.

This understanding does not, by any means, undermine the importance of nutrition; and although the swift curveball and its consequential inward journey smothered Kensu’s nutritional aspirations for a while, it all eventually comes together as key components of a holistic lifestyle, for after all, life is holistic.
